Presbyterian Support Central Quality and Innovation Awards

Presbyterian Support Central Quality and Innovation Awards

Presbyterian Support Central is one of seven independent regional organisations making a difference together across New Zealand under the Presbyterian Support banner. Presbyterian Support Central operates in Taranaki, Whanganui, Manawatu, Horowhenua, Wairarapa and the Greater Wellington region.

For over 100 years, Presbyterian Support Central has been offering quality care throughout the region and are best known for their elderly care services. Presbyterian Support Central have 15 Residential Care Homes, 1500 Community Clients. PSC are also fortunate to have an additional service called Family works that provides counselling and support to families in the community.

The Quality and Innovation Awards have been established to recognise, encourage and reward innovation and quality activities undertaken by both staff and volunteers through Presbyterian Support Central. The awards are open to all staff and volunteers for Presbyterian Support Central across both its Enliven and Family Works services, which includes residential and community care services. The concept of the awards was developed 5 years ago by Management, and each year has grown bigger and better with a growing number of entries and sponsors.
We have been excited at the number of entries (over 60) received for the Awards this year and by the calibre of the entries, along with the creativity that has been shown by PSC staff and volunteers.

To celebrate the effort and work of all involved, a formal dinner was held our residential home in Levin. 120 guests attended including Clients, volunteers and Staff. The actor and comedienne Ginette McDonald, was the guest speaker for the evening, and presented a lively and entertaining speech. The organising committee was made up of a number of staff who volunteered many hours of their own time to make the evening a great success.

A key benefit of the Quality and Innovations Program is how the ideas of last year's finalists and winners ideas have spread throughout the organisation. Sharing and showcasing innovations is what this event is all about.

Ten Award categories were established so employees and volunteers have no limitations on the type or choice of Quality and Innovation Programs that can be undertaken. The Award Categories include;
  • Going beyond the call of duty,
  • Demonstrable improvement to the lives of residents or clients,
  • Improved working environment for staff or resulted in efficiencies,
  • Improved Health & Safety,
  • Outstanding Volunteers
  • Community Support Initiative
  • Family Works Initiative
  • Best Eden Initiative
  • Team award for the greatest quality initiative and
  • Other Nominations.
While Chris Graham, our CEO recognises that everyone's a winner including employees, volunteers, residents, families and the wider community, the overall winner and runner up were selected and announced during the celebration dinner.

The winning innovation that has made demonstrable improvement to the lives of residents was "Turning a storage area into a Men's Shed" completed at our Brightwater residential facility. The innovation was led by the Home Chaplain and supported by 3 of Brightwaters' Male Residents in the Eden Circle. Local Community Involvement was also invaluable with the donation of equipment, tools, furnishing, and Helpers (men only of course!)

The runner up was the "Countryside mural which is decorated and events highlighted throughout the year" at Kandahar Court and completed by a staff Member. Kandahar Court is a Dementia Care facility in Masterton. Many of the clients come from a Rural / Farming background and therefore are attuned to the seasons and the environment. The mural acts as a base on which the Residents and Staff decorate for season changes, and significant celebrations. The large mural has become an opportunity for interaction and is providing a great deal of pleasure to the Residents, Staff and Visitors. It has certainly become a talking point!
The ranges of the projects undertaken are truly outstanding and to get further inspired and share in these great ideas feel free to contact Shona Daube who would be happy to share.
